The Stabbler concept is depicted in the figure below:

A fraction of the light pulse is extracted to drive a photoconductive switch which is inserted between the electrodes of a Pockels cell. While The main pulse is being delayed, the photoconductive switch acts simultaneously as the energy detector and the modulator for the Pockels cell. The Pockels cell capacitance will discharge at a rate which depends upon the the laser pulse energy : when the input pulse energy is high, the discharge is fast and the Pockels cell is driven at a lower voltage than when the input pulse energy is low.
